Arbeia Roman fort South Shields

South Shields Arbeia Roman fort.

Arbeia Roman fort was built in 120 and was the Roman maritime supply centre for Hadrian’s Wall, it contains the only permanent stone built granaries found in the whole of Britain.
It was occupied up until the time the Romans left Britain in the 5th century.
It is possible Arbeia means “the fort of Arab troops” as some of the troops based at the fort were from Mesopotamia. Other soldiers based at the fort were from Spain, and many troops would have stayed in the Tyneside area after their tour of duty and would have been assimilated into the local population.
