Grace Darling Bamburgh

Grace Darling, Bamburgh.

Grace Darling (24 November 1815 – 20 October 1842) was a lighthouse keeper's daughter whose father ran a lighthouse on the Farne Islands.
She is known for a daring rescue which took place on the 07/09/1838 when the ship the SS Forfarshire ran aground on rocks near to the lighthouse. Showing great courage Grace rowed out to the survivors in stormy seas, saving many lives.
Grace became famous throughout Britain and even received a £50 reward from Queen Victoria, she died from tuberculosis at the age of only 26.
Grace is buried with her mother and father in a  grave in St. Aidan’s churchyard, Bamburgh, and a nearby  cenotaph commemorates her life.
There is a small museum in Bamburgh dedicated to Grace.
