Lord Armstrong statue Newcastle

The Armstrong Statue, Newcastle.

The statue next to the Great North Museum is in honour of Lord William Armstrong who was born within a mile of Newcastle city centre. He was a major industrialist who had armament factories and shipyards on Tyneside. He built Cragside mansion in Northumberland near Rothbury, which was the first building in the world to be powered by hydro-electricity power, using incandescent lamps provided by the inventor Joseph Swan.
