St Nicholas Cathedral Newcastle


St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle.

The Church of England's St Nicolas Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle it represents the Diocese of Newcastle stretching from Berwick Upon Tweed to Alston in Cumbria.
Founded in 1091 in the same period as the nearby Castle Keep , it was destroyed by fire 1216 and the current building was rebuilt by 1350. Cathedral status was given in 1882.
St Nicholas is the patron saint of rivers and boats, which may reflect the importance of the river Tyne.
On 22/9/2015 The Right Reverend Christine Hardman made history when she became the first female Bishop of the Diocese of Newcastle, and only the second female Bishop in the church of England.
