The Wind on the Tyne

The Wind on the Tyne.

The river Tyne has a long history of industrial development and in the past shipbuilding and coal played an important part in that history.
But recently another industry has started to make its mark on this river- wind power.
Here are pictures taken on the 01/04/2017 which show the ship the Sea Installer berthed at Swans, which is designed to install wind turbines at sea, and images of a series of large wind turbines being constructed at Shepherd Offshore

Otterburn Northumberland

Otterburn, Northumberland.

Otterburn is a small village in Northumberland, 31 miles (50km) from Newcastle and 16 miles (26 km) from the Scottish border, the name simply means otter stream.
In 1388 the area was the scene of a major battle and a memorial to the battle, the Percy Cross, stands outside the village. Near to the village is an Iron Age Hillfort.
Otterburn contains Otterburn Castle (originally called Otterburn Tower) which was built in 1830 although it may have incorporated a 13th century tower house. It is now a hotel.
St John the Evangelist's church was built between 1855 and 1857.
Otterburn is near to a large army training range.

The bottom two pictures overlook the Black Middens, a notorious part of the river where sailing ships were dashed against the rocks and many sailors lost their lives.
The tragedies led to the building of the Tyne Piers photos of which can be seen here. .
Middens is derived from an old Danish word meaning dump.

North Shields Wooden Dollies

North Shields Wooden Dollies.

The Wooden Dollies have been a feature of North Shields for well over 200 years.
The original Wooden Dolly was a female figurehead taken from a collier brig named Alexander and Margaret which had been attacked held for ransom on the high seas in 1781.
The figurehead found its way to the town and was placed next to the Custom House Quay, sailors developed a tradition of cutting a small sliver of wood to take with them for luck when on their perilous sea journeys.
Naturally this meant the Dollies had to be replaced from time to time, these pictures show three versions of the Wooden Dolly in North Shields today, the original sculpture having developed into a fishwife over time. For more pictures of the Fish Quay at North Shields, please click here.
