George Stephenson's birthplace Wylam Northumberland

George Stephenson's birthplace, Wylam, Northumberland.

The great Tyneside engineer George Stephenson was born in a modest miners cottage not far from the river Tyne.
The cottage was built among many others to house mining families who worked in nearby coal mines. The current footpath follows the course of the old wagon way from which the young Stephenson would have seen the coal wagons go by.
It was from these humble beginnings that Stephenson, "The Father of the Railways"  rose to become one of the greatest engineers in history.
Further photos & information of George and Robert Stephenson's impact on the North East can be seen here.
